PRODUCTION SOUND RESOURCES
Signal Flow
Signal flow is the map of your system. When every signal path is intentional, troubleshooting becomes fast, routing stays consistent, and your day stays calm.
Goal
Make audio travel from source to file with zero surprises.
Method

Think in straight lines, confirm each link, label everything.

Result
Fewer mistakes, faster fixes, cleaner workflow.

Signal Flow in One Sentence
Where the audio is right now, and where is it supposed to go next. If you can answer that at any moment, your system is under control.
The Four Links
  • Input, microphone or receiver feeding a clean signal into the system.
  • Routing, channels to buses to outputs, no mystery paths.
  • Distribution, camera, IFB, monitors, and backup paths.
  • Recording, the final destination, verify you are monitoring the file path.
Three Rules That Prevent Most Problems
  • Build a default routing snapshot, return to it when something gets weird.
  • Label outputs by destination, not by connector type.
  • Confirm signal at the destination, not only on meters upstream.
Routing Checklist
Step
What to Confirm
Why it Matters
Inputs
Correct source, correct connector, correct gain, clean RF link.
Bad inputs turn into bad everything.
Channels
Channel assignment matches the input, trims and fader positions make sense.
Prevents phantom silence and wrong track assignments.
Buses
Mix bus receives the intended channels, sends are intentional and labeled.
Stops accidental sends to camera or IFB.
Outputs
Each output feeds the correct destination, level format matches destination needs.
A perfect mix is useless if the destination is wrong.
Recorder
Tracks armed, file path verified, monitor the record return when possible.
This is the place that counts the most.
