Production Sound Resources

PRODUCTION SOUND RESOURCES
Metadata & File Management
Metadata and file management are how your work survives the handoff to post. Clean audio without clean metadata creates confusion, delays, and unnecessary emails. The goal is clarity, consistency, and files that explain themselves.
Goal
Deliver audio files that are immediately usable and clearly identified.

Method
Apply consistent naming, scene and take logic, and predictable folder structure.
Result
Fewer questions from post, fewer corrections, and faster turnovers.

Consistent Naming
Set Once, Trust All Day
Metadata in One Sentence
Metadata is the written explanation of what your audio already knows. If it is correct, post never has to guess.
What Metadata Communicates

What the sound belongs to
When it was recorded
Where it fits in the edit
How it should be interpreted

When metadata is missing or inconsistent, post has to infer intent, which leads to mistakes.
Core Metadata Fields to Get Right
Scene
Use production scene naming exactly as provided.
Do not abbreviate or improvise.
Take
Auto increment when possible.
Reset intentionally when scene changes.
Roll
Keep roll names predictable and sequential.
Avoid mixing formats or restarting roll names mid day.
Track Names
Name tracks by function, not by connector.
For example boom, lav A, lav B, plant.
Notes
Use notes to explain anomalies, not to narrate the day.
If something went wrong or was intentional, note it.

Metadata and File Management Are Not Optional Polish

They are part of the recording itself
File Management Principles

Consistency beats cleverness
Use the same structure every day, every file
Structure before speed
A few seconds spent confirming folders prevents hours of cleanup later
Never rename files after delivery
Fix issues at the source, not after the fact

Recommended Folder Structure

Example Structure:
Project Name
Audio
Day Folder
Sound Report

Do not invent new folders mid day unless required
